A Study on light weight concrete using chemical admixtures

Abstract: Concrete is a construction material composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) as well as other cementations materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate made of crushed rocks such as limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water and chemical admixtures This chapter presents the detailed experimental programmed of this investigation. It includes materials and pumice stone used a detailed methodology of experimental programmed, mix proportions, specimen details, and test set up. The details of the tests conducted to ascertain the basic properties of constituent materials, the tests conducted on standard specimens and the experiments conducted using structural components are also explained. 0ne of the disadvantages of conventional concrete is the high self weight of concrete. Density of the Normal concrete is in the order of 2200 to 2600 kg/m3. This heavy self weight will make it to some extent an Uneconomical structural material. Attempts have been made in the past to reduce the self weight of concrete to increase the efficiency of concrete as a structural material. The light-weight concrete as we call is a concrete whose density varies from 300 to 1850 kg/m3.This project deals with the development of two types of lightweight concrete the one using lightweight aggregate (Pumice stone) and the other water floating type using zinc powder, aluminium powder. as an air entraining agent. This also shows the importance of water/cement ratio as in first type of concrete it relates to the smoothness of the surface and in second one it is a major factor which controls the expansion of concrete. This work presents the results of an experimental study investigating the effects pumice for light weight concrete on the mechanical properties of concrete. Experimental program consisted of compressive and tensile strength a test was carried out this study aims to investigate the compressive and tensile strength of light weight concrete, incorporated with zinc powder and aluminium powder at various dosages. For this, a drop weight test was performed on the 7 days and 28 days cured Plain and light weight concrete samples as per the testing procedure. The main aim of this experiment is to study the mechanical properties of light weight concrete of M20 grade with zinc powder added to concrete in different proportions i.e. 0.4%, 0.5%,0.6. Aluminium powder added to concrete in different proportions 0.5%,1.0% and 1.5% zinc powder with water cement ratio of 0.42. There are many advantages of having low density. It helps in reduction of dead load, increases the progress of building, and lowers haulage and handling Costs. The weight of a building on the foundation is an important factor in design, particularly in the case of weak soil and tall structures. In framed structures, the beams and columns have to carry load of floors and walls. If floors and walls are made up of light-weight concrete it will result in considerable economy. Another most important characteristic of light-weight concrete is the relatively low thermal conductivity.

Abstract: The project focuses on the development of wireless robot system that can inspect pipeline internally. The goal of the project is to design and fabricate a prototype which can navigate defect through pipelines. Pipelines are typically buried under ground; they are in contact with the soil and subjected to corrosion. Although it is less common, corrosion may also occur on inside surface of the pipe and reduces the strength of pipe. If a crack becomes sever the pipe can leak and in worst case may fail catastrophically. Pipe inspection is especially necessary when one should inspect an underground pipe. Internal Pipe Defect Detector (IPDD) aims to carry out inspection of pipelines through visual inspection with being mobile and powered by battery to make it wireless operated with a controller. Inspection robot has ability to move inside horizontal and vertical pipe along with long complex distance including bend in pipe. Pipe inspection robot can maintain traction between the wheels and pipe surface all the time due to its repositioning mechanism and this enables it to move or transverse vertical pipe section. Expansion and reduction in diameter is encountered in the device. This is achieved by the expansion and contraction of the spring in the device along with Sliding mechanism and four bar mechanism. As spring contracts diameter decreases and when expand it increases. The range of the diameter depends on the movement of transaction element along with the contraction and expansion capability of the spring. Image transmission takes place with the help of camera fitted in the device. This can be visualized in a monitor or can be saved for future analysis. The device is capable of forward and backward motion which is controlled by key pressed from the transmitter. Transmitter transmits data which is received by the receiver and decodes then forward and backward motion is achieved. The device is driven with the help of motor which are connected to battery. The range of the controller depends upon the module used. If Bluetooth module is used it would have a short range, while if Wi-Fi module used it can be used for long range

Abstract: The sustainability, strength and durability of any of the constituent material of concrete plays an important role in studying and determining the effects on the properties of concrete. Pores in concrete seem to be an immense problem ever since concrete was discovered. Pores attract water that leads to the ill effects such as acid intrusion, freezing and thawing, decrease in resistance to chloride ion, reduced compressive strength etc. Less permeability of concrete plays an important role in gaining the strength and reducing the corrosion of reinforcement in concrete. This paper reviews in studying the properties of concrete using quarry dust (robo sand) as a partial replacement of natural fine aggregate and carbon black as a partial replacement of cement in concrete by using different percentages of both the materials. Experiments have been conducted by introducing carbon black in concrete which is a waste of rubber industry to act as filler and which imparts the enhanced properties of concrete. In this present experimental study, various properties of concrete have been studied using quarry dust (robo sand, artificial sand, stone dust) as a replacement of natural fine aggregate and carbon black as a replacement of cement in concrete by using different percentages of both the materials. Based on the review of previous studies, it can be concluded that the improvement in the strength of concrete is attributed the hydration acceleration at the early ages due to the effect of the stone dust as microfillers. It was also found that the concrete porosity was lower than that of the corresponding concrete without robo sand at the same water/cement ratio. It was also found that at the percentage replacement of cement by carbon black (CB) (5%) and robo sand (RS) by natural sand (50%), the concrete becomes denser as both carbon black and stone dust act as micro fillers in the concrete due to their sizes with respect to cement and natural sand. Hence a study has been carried out using both the materials carbon black and robo sand simultaneously in the concrete. Moreover, the permeability of the concrete decreases which in turn would reduce the corrosion rate and in turn increase the durability and sustainability of concrete. Replacing a portion of cement with non-reactive waste material carbon black and natural sand with quarry dust and getting the increase in strength and durability at same w/c ratio is of utmost importance regarding the economy (sustainability).

Abstract: With the growing use of membranes in the water industry, different methods for using membranes to treat water is still occurring. Enhancing membrane performance is generally performed with extensive pretreatment methods before the feed water is filtered by the membrane. With the utilization of direct membrane filtration (DF), no pretreatment is performed and the membrane is exposed to raw wastewater. While this may suggest that membrane performance and permeate quality would suffer in the process, DF testing with a 0.03μm ultra filtration PVDF membrane showed that relatively high membrane flux was sustained while producing a high quality effluent. Due to the rejection of the membrane, a highly concentrated fraction of the wastewater, which is significantly reduced in volume but high in solids and organic strength, is obtained and can be treated in other ways.

A process is proposed to treat municipal wastewater by coupling a DF system with an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). AnMBRs generally treat industrial strength wastewater, which is high in chemical oxygen demand (COD), and may struggle with domestic wastewater, which is generally considered low strength in terms of COD.

The MFI method was adapted and used to test the fouling propensity of various treatment streams in the DFAnMBR system, including raw domestic Wastewater, concentrated domestic wastewater (20X by DF), and liquor from an active AnMBR.The effect of powdered activated carbon (PAC) on fouling propensity was also investigated. Raw wastewater had a fouling potential of about 25% of the AnMBR MFI, and with the utilization of PAC the fouling potential was further decreased to nearly 50% of the original fouling potential. The DF concentrated stream had a higher MFI value than liquor from the AnMBR, but presumably some of organics contributing to fouling would be degraded in the AnMBR. This study demonstrated that DF of raw wastewater is feasible, and the combined use of DF and AnMBR is highly promising.

Abstract: Decreasing of the natural resources is a common phenomenon in emerging countries like India due to increasing urbanization and Industrialization involving Construction of Infrastructure and other amenities. In view of this, professionals have started searching for suitable alternative materials for concrete so that the existing natural resources might be preserved to the possible extent, for the future generation. In this process, different industrial waste materials such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, tiles waste, quarry dust brick bats, fresh aggregates from destruction of structures, ceramic soundproofing waste, etc. have been tried as a feasible additional material in concrete and have also been successful. At present, although a small proportion of the post-consumer glass has been recycled and reused, a significant proportion, which is about 84% of the waste glass generated, is sent to landfill. Laboratory experiments were conducted on strength characteristics of concrete made with utilizing broken waste glass as 10%,20%,30% and 40% by weight of coarse aggregates for M-20 mix. These mixes were prepared following a specific W/C ratio of 0.5 and adding Alkali-silica reaction inhibitor agents. The concrete specimens were tested for compressive strength and durability at differ ages of concrete and the results obtained were compared with those of normal concrete. This results determined the permissibility of using waste glass as partial replacement of coarse aggregates up to 20% by weight glass can be used as an alternate construction material to coarse aggregates up to 20% by weight for glass as coarse aggregate size up to 12mm.This paper recommends that broken waste glass can be used as an alternate construction material to coarse aggregate in concrete without substantial change in strength and gives an overview of the current progress and recycling situation of waste glass and point out the direction for the proper use of waste glass as replacement of cement. These will not only help in the reuse of waste glass but also create a greener environment. Its use has advantage of being light weight and thus reducing the total cost of construction there by bringing economy in construction .

Abstract: Biodiesel is a substitute fuel to fossil diesel or customary diesel. It can be delivered from various sources, for instance, straight vegetable oil, animal oil/fats, tallow and waste cooking oil. The way toward changing over oils into biodiesels is Transeaterification. Mustard is the regular name for various species in the Brassica family. The types of which a great many people know is yellow mustard, alluded to as white mustard in Europe, and is developed essentially for fixing mustard seed. Thus, it doesn't have as high oil content as the other generally known Indian mustard alluded reciprocally in commerce as brown or oriental mustard. This present mustard's organic name is Brassica juncea. Juncea varieties are developed for edible leaves or greens or for condiment mustard, and have been and are progressively developed as an oilseed crop. Mustard yields around 181.7 liters of biodiesel per acre.An attempt is made to optimize the process parameters of biodiesel produced using Indian Mustard oil (Brassica juncea). The identification of optimal processing parameters is fundamental in the transformation of Biodiesel from different feedstocks by prudence of the basic impact of such parameters on overall production cost and quality. Production of mustard seed oil ethyl esters (MSOEE) through alkali- catalyzed transesterification with ethanol utilizing potassium hydroxide as an catalyst. The impact of the process parameters, for example, catalyst concentration, ethanol to oil molar ratio, reaction temperature, reaction duration was researched in order to discover the optimal conditions for the transesterification process. This experimentation methodically builds up a hybrid optimization method for various quality attributes by integrating the Taguchi parameter design, grey relational analysis, and principal component analysis. To exhibit the efficiency and validity of the proposed hybrid optimization method in controlling all influential Biodiesel processing parameters amid its production are considered. To maximize the yield, minimize the viscosity; the ideal mix of various process parameters is resolved. Single step group transesterification process is done on Mustard oil with alcohols, within the sight of base catalyst potassium hydroxide (KOH) and methanol as solvent, to get biodiesel. The PCA is used to figure the weight of the responses while the optimization is done. Along these lines, the impacts of each of these input parameters are analyzed and exhibited. These results give the information that how to control the parameters keeping in mind the end goal to get the best yield and review viscosity as low. Yield of biodiesel and viscosity are optimized with consideration of performance characteristics namely reaction temperature, reaction time, Catalyst Concentration & Alcohol %. A grey relational grade obtained from the grey relational analysis is utilized to understand the biodiesel production with the various performance characteristics. Furthermore, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is to be applied to distinguish the most significant factor. Finally, confirmation tests are performed to make a comparison between the experimental results and developed model. These values of this parameters are observed that optimal values for the input parameters for biodiesel production are Reaction temperature 600C, Reaction time 20 min , Catalyst concentration 1.5 % wt, Alcohol % 10 the yield of Mustard oil biodiesel if increased to 97.12% and viscosity 4.10 cSt. are the desired optimal combination where the GRG value is maximum (0.9998) which are the best combination of this analysis. In this way, the Hybrid Integration of Taguchi Parametric Design, Gray Relational Analysis, and Principal Component Analysis Optimization ends up being extraordinary compared to other strategy for accomplishing parameters that suffice to the future needs of Biodiesel generation.
